Mahaba Elementary School got its name from the barangay where it’s
located. Browsing over the files, this writer could not find any written
record of how this school came to be. To established the record and fired
by curiosity she made a resolved to search for anybody who could provide
information. Asking some of the elderly in the community she only obtained
vague answer. So, as a last tried to startigize – talk to someone who is
from DepEd and the same time a resident of the barangay. This led her to
the door of retired teacher Mrs. Resgonio y Ronan. There she discovered
a first-hand information from the memory of then, 5 year-old girl. Laced in
her narration is the secret puppy love of a classmate in Grade I. Mr. Jose
Resgonio which blossomed into true love and who later on became her
partner for life. But that’s going beyond the history of Mahaba Elementary
School. I decided to mention their love story here because somehow, it
helped in bringing back vivid memories of their childhood days and the
humble beginnings of Mahaba Elementary School.
To the best of her recollection “Ma’am Roding” as she is fondly called,
was five years old when the school was opened in the year 1954 thru the
efforts of the Barangay Council of which her father, Mr. Abundio Ronan
was a member. The incumbent Tentiente del Barrio then was Mr. Julian
Embudo. This was corroborative by Mr. Bienvenido P. Embudo, son of
Julian Embudo. He said, the school was realized thru the help of then
Congressman Pio Duran and Mayor Sonny Gaya.
There were 20 pupils, more or less, among them were Rodita Ronan and
Jose Resgonio. The class was housed in the residence of Mr. Francisco
Tibor, presently the residence of the late Luis Tibor, grandson of
Francisco. The first Teacher was Mrs. Virginia Roco who also became the
school head or Teacher-in-Charge (TIC). On its second year of operation,
a lot was donated by the benevolent resident, Mr. Julian Mantes on which
a single classroom made of bamboo and nipa was constructed thru
“bayanihan” by the parents of the community.
According to Ma’am Roding, they were in Grade Four when the typhoon
levelled down the temporary school building. With no more classroom to
got to, the pupils were dispersed to different schools nearby like
Binatagan, Barayong and San Ramon in Oas, even Tabiguian, Tabaco,
were Ma’am Roding finished her elementary.
Mahaba Elementary School reopened in 1959 headed by Mr. Paulo
Valenzuela. Year after the grade levels progressed becoming complete
elementary school in 1961. Since then, it was maintained until this day.
